Medical Advice We Give Our Own Families

The most trusted health advice doesn’t always come from textbooks—it comes from what we tell the people we care about most. Here’s a peek into the everyday health and wellness tips our own team shares with their families.

Medical Advice We Give Our Own Families

From our team to yours — the care tips we live by.

At Connected Health, our team is made up of people who are not only passionate about medicine, but also deeply invested in the health of their own families. We often say, “We treat our patients like we would our loved ones”, and that’s more than just a phrase. It’s how we practice every day.

We asked a few of our dedicated team members: What’s the health advice you give to the people you care about most? Here’s what they shared.

Kristen Hanselman, Certified Medical Assistant

Kristen approaches every patient interaction with empathy, honesty, and a deep understanding of how physical and mental health are intertwined. And when it comes to giving advice to her own family, she keeps it simple but powerful:

“If you don’t take care of you, then who will?”

As someone who has navigated her own mental health journey, Kristen is passionate about reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations —especially among women and young mothers.

“I was officially diagnosed with ADHD in 2023, but I started struggling postpartum in 2021. It led to severe postpartum depression, and I didn’t know where to turn at first,” she shares. “That experience really opened my eyes to how many people are silently suffering and how much better things can get when you have the right support.”

Her go-to advice for loved ones? Make mental health a priority, speak up when you're struggling, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. “It’s something I try to be open about because I want others to know they’re not alone.”

Richard Bennaugh, Certified PharmacyTechnician

Richard is quick to remind his own family that something as simple as rest is often underestimated. “Get plenty of rest,” he says. “Your body needs it to recuperate and support a strong immune system.” It’s a foundational habit he encourages not just when someone is sick, but as part of a daily routine for overall health.

Another habit he stands by? Putting the phone away—especially when spending time with loved ones. Richard makes it a point to leave his phone in another room when visiting his twin grandsons so he can be fully present. “I don’t want to miss a second of those moments,” he says. That same principle applies to bedtime: keeping the phone out of reach helps avoid the temptation to scroll and supports better sleep. “Time can get away from you so easily,” he adds. “Next thing you know, three hours are gone.”

Carla D'Augostine, RPh

Carla, one of our Registered Pharmacists, and mom to two teenagers, encourages her family to keep wellness simple and consistent. Her top advice? Move every day. “Even just a walk makes a difference,” she says. She also emphasizes the importance of strength training three times a week, especially as we age, to help maintain muscle mass.

When it comes to food, Carla helps her family understand the value of whole, clean options. One of her family's favorite tools is an app called Yuka, which allows you to scan food products and see a health score rating. “It’s a great way to make more informed choices when you’re grocery shopping and want to feel good about what you’re bringing home.”

She also reminds her kids—and herself—to be mindful of social media use. “It’s easy for it to become a bad habit,” she says. “It can interfere with sleep and even get in the way of real connections with the people around you.”

Bonus Tip from the Pharmacy Team

Carla and Richard work side by side in our pharmacy, so it’s no surprise they share many of the same wellness philosophies. One they both feel strongly about? Skip the alcohol. Whether it's for better sleep, sharper focus, or setting a healthy example for their families, they agree: fun doesn’t require a drink in hand. And if you ever hear karaoke echoing from the break room, now you’ll know—no cocktails involved.
