Spring Travel: How to Travel Smarter (and Safer) This Season
Real stories — and real tips — from our clinicians
Spring has a way of making us want to go somewhere new.
Maybe it’s a long-awaited beach vacation, a European adventure, a family visit, or simply a few days away to reset. Travel gives us memories we carry for years — sunsets, laughter, new foods, and time together that feels rare in everyday life.
But when we started talking with our team at Connected Health about travel, something interesting came up.
Almost everyone had a story.
Not about the perfect view or the best meal — but about the moment something went wrong.
Because if you’ve traveled enough, you probably have one too.
And oddly enough, those moments are often the ones we remember most.
The Trip You Remember… For the Wrong Reason
One of our pharmacists shared a story about a beach vacation with her family, the kind you spend months looking forward to. Early into the trip, her daughter developed strep throat.
Instead of relaxing by the ocean, the day turned into finding a doctor in an unfamiliar place, navigating prescriptions, and convincing a sick child to take medication while away from home. Just when things felt under control, the family moved to a second resort and realized the medication had been left behind at the first location.
What should have been carefree quickly became stressful logistics and worry.
Another team member remembers being in Italy over Easter weekend. She needed something simple — Tylenol — but every pharmacy was closed.
“I was trying to enjoy the city and take in the sights,” she shared, “but all I remember from that day was having terrible cramps and nothing to treat them with. I was so uncomfortable I couldn't walk easily with the group — and if you’ve been to Italy, you know walking is the whole experience! I kept thinking, why didn’t I just throw Tylenol in my suitcase?”
Sometimes it isn’t an illness, just unexpected needs.
One clinician recalls her teen at the beach with a painful sunburn. She went searching for zinc oxide, only to discover the resort pharmacy had no idea what she was asking for.
Now, she laughs, “We include zinc oxide in every travel kit.”
And then there are moments that feel more serious.
One of our clinicians, also a mom, shared a story about her daughter studying abroad in Spain. Her inhaler ran out — not a severe asthmatic, but someone who still needed access to a rescue inhaler. The local pharmacy provided what they claimed was the same medication, but when she sent a photo home, her pharmacist mother immediately recognized it wasn’t equivalent.
Had her asthma been more severe, the situation could have escalated quickly.
Thankfully, with guidance from her mom and communication with her care team at Connected Health, they were able to resolve the issue smoothly.
Why These Stories Matter
We could keep going — because nearly everyone on our staff has a version of this story.
A missed medication.
A closed pharmacy.
A language barrier.
An unexpected illness at exactly the wrong time.
Travel doesn’t go wrong because people are careless. In fact, most travelers feel prepared.
But preparation often means packing clothes and confirming reservations, not planning for the unexpected health moments that can derail an otherwise perfect trip.
And when something does happen, it can feel scary and overwhelming — especially far from home.
Traveling Safer Starts Before You Leave
Our team often says the best travel medicine happens before the trip begins.
That’s why we created travel consultations designed around how people actually travel today. Before departure, we talk through:
- Where you’re going
- How long you’ll be away
- Dining plans and food exposure
- Excursions and activities
- Climate and environmental factors
- Personal health considerations
The goal isn’t to assume something will go wrong; it’s to make sure you’re ready if it does.
Because preparation changes everything.
The Power of a Travel Health Kit
Many travel issues come down to access.
A basic medication unavailable on a holiday.
A familiar product lost in translation.
A prescription difficult to replace abroad.
Our Travel Health Kits were created directly from real experiences like the ones above. Each kit is thoughtfully assembled by our clinicians and includes essentials travelers often don’t realize they’ll need until the moment arises — from cold and flu support and pain relievers to first-aid supplies, stomach remedies, and hydration support. We also help patients plan ahead for their personal prescriptions, ensuring they have what they need while away from home.
These aren’t random travel-size items tossed into a bag. They’re carefully chosen based on how people actually travel and the most common situations our providers see patients encounter.
It’s not just about packing for emergencies.
It’s about removing stress from the unknown.
Care That Travels With You
One of the biggest comforts travelers tell us they value is connection.
Through our medical app, patients can communicate with our care team while away — asking questions, confirming medications, or getting guidance when something unexpected happens.
Sometimes reassurance alone makes all the difference. Instead of searching online or navigating unfamiliar healthcare systems alone, you have a trusted team just a message away.
Because Travel Should Be About the Memories You Choose
When we reflected on all these stories as a team, one thing stood out:
Everyone remembered the stressful moment more vividly than parts of the trip itself.
And that’s exactly what we hope to change.
Travel should be about experiences and connection — not scrambling for care in an unfamiliar place.
At Connected Health, we’ve built a travel program designed to help you leave with confidence and return with memories worth keeping. We prepare for the unexpected so you don’t have to!
And while our patients know this well, our travel health services and kits are available to anyone because we believe everyone deserves peace of mind when they travel.
