How to Stay Active All Summer (Even When Life Gets Busy)

Summer schedules can make it tough to stick to healthy habits. Between vacations, hot weather, and busy calendars, it's easy for exercise to take a back seat. Personal Trainer Mike Marchese shares simple, realistic tips to help you stay active all summer long.

How to Stay Active All Summer (Even When Life Gets Busy)

Summer is full of reasons to press pause on your workout routine. Between family vacations, packed calendars, hot temperatures, and longer evenings spent outdoors, even the most dedicated exercisers can find themselves falling out of their routine.

The good news? You don't have to work out perfectly to stay healthy. A few simple adjustments can help you stay active, maintain your progress, and feel your best all summer long.

We asked Mike Marchese, Personal Trainer at Connected Health, for his advice.

1. Let Go of the "All or Nothing" Mindset

One missed workout doesn't erase your progress.

"Many people think if they can't do their normal one-hour workout, there's no point in exercising," says Mike. "But even 20 or 30 minutes of movement is beneficial."

Whether it's a quick walk, bodyweight exercises at home, or swimming with the kids, every bit of activity counts.

2. Exercise Earlier (or Later) in the Day

Summer heat can make workouts uncomfortable—and even unsafe.

Try scheduling outdoor activities:

  • Early in the morning
  • After the sun begins to set
  • In shaded areas whenever possible

If it's simply too hot outside, move your workout indoors or choose activities like strength training or stretching.

3. Make Activity Part of Your Summer Plans

Exercise doesn't always have to happen in the gym.

Summer offers plenty of opportunities to stay active naturally:

  • Hiking
  • Paddleboarding or kayaking
  • Swimming
  • Playing with your kids or grandkids
  • Walking while sightseeing on vacation
  • Biking around your neighborhood

The goal is simply to keep moving.

4. Plan for Vacation—Don't Quit Completely

Vacation is meant for relaxation, but that doesn't mean you have to stop moving entirely.

Mike recommends setting realistic expectations.

"If you're traveling, aim to stay active instead of trying to follow your normal routine. Walk more, explore your destination, or fit in a short hotel workout."

Remember, maintaining your habits is often easier than starting over.

5. Stay Hydrated

Hydration becomes even more important during the summer months.

Before, during, and after exercise:

  • Drink water regularly.
  • Replace electrolytes after longer or more intense workouts.
  • Listen to your body and take breaks if you begin feeling overheated.

Proper hydration helps improve performance and recovery while reducing the risk of heat-related illness.

6. Schedule Your Workouts Like Appointments

Summer calendars fill up quickly.

Instead of hoping you'll "find time," block your workouts on your calendar just like you would any other important commitment.

Consistency doesn't require perfection—it simply requires a plan.

7. Focus on Feeling Good, Not Being Perfect

Some weeks you'll exercise more than others, and that's okay.

The goal isn't to have the perfect summer fitness routine. It's to continue building healthy habits that support your long-term health.

As Mike reminds patients:

"The best workout is the one you'll actually do. Staying consistent with small efforts is far more effective than aiming for perfection."
